I live within Pennsylvania, so I am not sure that I can answer the following question objectively, so I am asking you…my reader(s) for help. I am not exactly sure how many of you there are out there, but I am wondering if the song "Allentown" by Billy Joel was actually a popular song. I know the song gets a lot of air play around here because it is a song about a city in PA that my town happens to be an hour away from. I am wondering if maybe…in Kansas or something this song was popular at one point in time or if it is just a "B-side" type of song. If you are reading this and from another state please post a comment and let me know what you think because I am curious. And in the off chance you haven't heard the song here are the lyrics:

Allentown by Billy Joel

Well we're living here in Allentown

And they're closing all the factories down

Out in Bethlehem they're killing time

Filling out forms

Standing in line

Well our fathers fought the Second World War

Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore

Met our mothers in the USO

Asked them to dance

Danced with them slow

And we're living here in Allentown

But the restlessness was handed down

And it's getting very hard to stay

Well we're waiting here in Allentown

For the Pennsylvania we never found

For the promises our teachers gave If we worked hard If we behaved

So the graduations hang on the wall

But they never really helped us at all

No they never taught us what was real

Iron and coke

And chromium steel

And we're waiting here in Allentown

But they've taken all the coal from the ground

And the union people crawled away

Every child has a pretty good shot

To get at least as far as their old man got

But something happened on the way to that place

They threw an American flag in our place

Well I'm living here in Allentown

And it's hard to keep a good man down

But I won't be getting very hard to stay

And we're living here in Allentown

(It's a pretty sad, but true song for this region of the country)

Arena Cross

By M Davies   /     Feb 25, 2005  /     Misc/Crap, The Pre-Dooce File  /     0 Comment

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY Come see the thrills, the spills and the bone crushing chills at none other than the Arena Cross. On TV the other night they showed dump trucks emptying approximately 55,000 million tons of dirt onto the floor of the arena. Passing by there tonight there were trailers in the parking lot….trailers. Then I was thinking to myself, "Nascar", no that isn't until June. Then I was thinking, "hockey"…no, no one takes a trailer to a hockey game. Then it dawned on me. ARENA CROSS. What was I thinking! Obvioiusly people come from miles around just to see the spectacular Arena Cross. I think its like following the Grateful Dead or something. Who'd want to go and smell exhaust fumes for 3 hours? *Gag* If I wanted to increase my CO intake, I'd suck the back of a car's tail pipe.

I found one good thing about the potholes in Wilkes-Barre…. Now get ready, because this will be the only time I say something POSITIVE about potholes. Here goes: Potholes give you great traction in the snow. There I said it. That having been said, I hope it stops snowing and they fill the potholes. Move along, nothing more to see here.
